Cares Trail: guide and safety warning
Poncebos–Caín through the Cares gorge: facts, tips and what to check before you go.
The essentials
- It links Poncebos (Asturias) and Caín (León) through the Cares gorge: about 11 km each way, 22 km out and back, with 831 m of cumulative climb, according to Turismo Asturias (high difficulty).
- It is a linear route: plan the return trip or walk it out and back (over 5 hours).
- Check that it is open before you go: its status can change after rockfalls or in bad weather.
Safety warning
The trail is a path cut into the rock, with narrow, exposed stretches above the river and a risk of falling stones. A rockfall hit the area at the end of July 2026, and the Turismo Asturias website has shown a precautionary closure notice. We cannot say whether the route is open or closed today: check its current status with Turismo Asturias and the Picos de Europa National Park before you set out, and always follow closure signs.
